National Healthcare Decisions Day Joint Resolution... Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) and US Representative Phil Gingrey (R-GA) introduced a joint resolution to recognize National Healthcare Decisions Day. This bipartisan House-Senate resolution supporting National Healthcare Decisions Day encourages all Americans to prepare advance directives and encourages healthcare, civic, religious, and other organizations to promote advance directives. The resolution will soon be available through the Library of Congress at http://thomas.loc.gov, by searching under the sponsors' names. Read the press release. The resolution is a good opportunity to issue a press release about your organization's National Healthcare Decisions Day activities.
National Volunteer Week: April 27-May 3...You will find some of the Volunteer Week materials for 2008 posted on the NHPCO Web site."It Must Be Love," the theme for the 2007-2008 Outreach Kit, carries over to National Volunteer Week. NHPCO encourages members and coalitions to be as creative as possible and adapt the materials we offer in any way that will support the important work you are doing in your community. The National Volunteer Week materials are located in the Communications section of NHPCO's website.
National Hospice Foundation's 2008 Gala to be a Red Carpet Affair... "A Red Carpet Affair" will be held on Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, in conjunction with NHPCO's MLC. This year's event will applaud some of the noted celebrities who have generously lent their influence to support hospice and palliative care at the local, national and international levels. Actor, producer and pediatric care advocate Melissa Gilbert, will accept the Humanitarian Leadership Award in recognition of her work on behalf of children facing life-limiting conditions. Ms. Gilbert is the board president of the Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition (CHPCC) and spokesperson for the Partnering for Children campaign launched by NHPCO, NHF and CHPCC in 2007. There are even international partners hosting events; the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps in Europe and the Puerto Rico chapter of National Association of Social Workers (NASW). NHPCO's 23rd Management and Leadership Conference... Advocacy in Action: Mobilizing People and Organizations to Lead Change is the topic of this year's MLC, April 10-12, 2008 in Washington, DC. If you are planning to attend and have not yet registered, you can register onsite in Washington DC. Just visit the registration desk at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. Caring Connections is hosting a half-day Preconference Seminar that is free with conference registration. This seminar, "Developing an Effective and Doable Marketing Plan" will be facilitated by a national hospice marketing expert on Wednesday, April 9, 1-4 pm. The Association for Death Education and Counseling's (ADEC) 30th Annual Conference... "Global Mourning--Death Among and Beyond Ourselves" will take place in Montreal April 30-May 3. Keynote speakers include Kim Phuc, Stephen Lewis, and Leila M. Gupta. For more information or to register, visit the ADEC website.
The International Death, Grief and Bereavement Conference... will take place June 1-4 in LaCrosse, WI. The conference will focus on Sudden and Traumatic Death. Registration is open now, with a discounted rate available before April 18.

Missouri hosts state-wide NHDD event... The Missouri State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Missouri's National Healthcare Decisions Day Liaison, has coordinated a state-wide event scheduled for April 16; a news conference on the state capitol where college students will act out situations where an Advance Directive is and is not present, to make the public aware of the importance of Advance Care Planning. They have also accomplished having the governor sign a proclamation in recognition of this day, gathered more than 30 other organizations in Missouri to partner and participate in NHDD, and is receiving funds from the Missouri attorney general's office for the April event.
