The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, has created a podcast series that brings the latest healthcare news and research from experts in the field to the public. Designed to be user-friendly and free of charge, the Healthcare 411 news series is available on AHRQ's Web site at www.healthcare411.org.  
 
Encourage Your Community to Update Their Living Wills... According to a new study conducted by Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, life-prolonging treatment preferences change as an individual's health deteriorates. The study suggests that individuals update their living wills as their healthcare situation changes. Grant Opportunity for Utilization of the Arts in a Healthcare Setting...Johnson & Johnson, working in partnership with the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, seeks to promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for patients, their families, and caregivers. Since 2001, the organization has provided funding to 115 programs in the U.S. and Canada, representing leading models and initiatives in high quality healthcare through the use of arts. Proposals are now being sought from healthcare and/or arts organizations that have established arts in healthcare programs with evidence of initial impact. The deadline for letters of inquiry is August 8, 2008. For information and eligibility requirements, please review the guidelines posted on the Society for Arts in Healthcare Web site.

Caring Connections sponsored a free Preconference Seminar at NHPCO's 2008 Management and Leadership Conference on Developing an Effective and Doable Marketing Plan featuring Michael Ferris from Hospice Marketing Solutions and Richard Chesney from Healthcare Market Resources.  The resources that were provided to participants are now available to download for free at www.caringinfo.org (under 'Community', then 'Outreach Strategies and Tools') include a Marketing Plan Planner, Checklist and Action Plan, and Market Analysis Worksheets.  Also, check out all the valuable outreach resources available for your hospice and coalition under the 'Community' section of www.caringinfo.org
New Booklet from Caring Connections...End-of-Life Decisions is the newest addition to Caring Connections' resources on patient, family and provider education. This 24-page booklet informs readers about the forms involved in advance care planning, such as living wills and healthcare power of attorney documents. Lotsa Helping Hands... Caring Connections and Lotsa Helping Hands have partnered together to provide a web-based resource for friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to assist caregivers in need. This free program can help you support those in your community who need help with caregiving tasks. To access this valuable resource, go to www.caringconnections.lotsahelpinghands.com. California Coalition for Compassionate Care in Sacramento, CA, offers advance care planning seminars in workplace settings.
