New Study Reports on Americans’ Faith in Healing Miracles… A report published in the August issue of the professional journal, Archives in Surgery reports that 57 percent of randomly surveyed adults said God’s intervention could save a family member even if physicians declared treatment would be futile. Additional findings indicate that
61 percent of the public and 20 percent of professionals believe that a miracle can save a person in a persistent vegetative state. The study found that 41 percent of the public said religious beliefs would be important when making decisions about their own medical care.  To view more news coverage, visit the ABC News Web site. Note:  Caring Connections has a new outreach guide, “It’s About How You LIVE – In Faith” to help your organization engage faith communities with end-of-life issues which is available to download for free at www.caringinfo.org/community (under ‘Faith Outreach’).
Medicare Launches New Web Site for Family Caregivers…The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched a comprehensive new Web site for caregivers that is designed to serve as an "all-inclusive resource on Medicare and other caregiver-related issues."  The "Ask Medicare" site clearly explains what Medicare does and doesn't cover, and helps caregivers find organizations that assist the elderly and their caregivers. Visit now at: http://www.medicare.gov/caregivers/.  (Also note: November is "National Family Caregivers Month” to bring attention to the needs of family caregivers and recognize the 50 million family members caring for loved ones.  For more information, visit the National Family Caregivers Association Web site.)

Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care… The UK has announced the creation of The Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, dedicated to research in end-of-life care. The Institute will allow researchers to work together to promote and carry out research, teaching and training of palliative care. Cicely Saunders International is working in partnership with King's College London to build the Institute which will be based at Kings College Hospital in South East London. Completion of the building is expected by November 2009.  To learn more, visit www.cicelysaundersfoundation.org.
